Phillies Achieve Rare Triple Play
On the 25th, the Philadelphia Phillies made headlines by executing the first triple play of the MLB season during their game against the Detroit Tigers. This remarkable “1-3-5” triple play, initiated by the pitcher, hadn’t been seen since July 12, 1929. It marked the Phillies’ 37th triple play in team history, the last occurring on August 28, 2017.
The Triple Play Unfolds
The triple play occurred in the bottom of the third inning. Phillies’ starting pitcher Aaron Nola opened the inning by giving up two consecutive hits, putting runners on first and third. Facing Matt Vierling, Nola threw a 92 mph sinker that shattered Vierling’s bat, sending the ball directly back to Nola. He threw to first for the second out, and then Bryce Harper relayed the ball to third base, completing the rare triple play.
Historic Context
This was the first triple play in the MLB since the Angels executed one against the Royals on August 19, 2023. For the Phillies, it was their first triple play since August 28, 2017, when they achieved it against the Cubs.
Nola’s Stellar Performance
Aaron Nola pitched seven strong innings, striking out six and allowing six hits. His only blemish was a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Phillies’ offense started strong in the first inning, with four consecutive batters reaching base, three of whom hit extra-base hits. Alec Bohm’s two-run homer extended the lead to 4-0.
Harper’s Big Hit
In the sixth inning, Bryce Harper blasted a three-run homer with two outs, stretching the lead to 7-1. Alec Bohm continued his impressive performance with his fourth hit of the game in the eighth inning, driving in the Phillies’ eighth run. The Phillies ultimately defeated the Tigers 8-1, with Nola securing his ninth win of the season.
Phillies Dominate with Offense and Defense
The Phillies’ victory over the Tigers showcased their prowess both offensively and defensively. The triple play, a rare and thrilling defensive feat, was complemented by strong pitching from Nola and powerful hitting from the lineup, particularly from Harper and Bohm. The team’s comprehensive performance secured a convincing win and added a memorable moment to their season. (Betso88)
